The outside of the lantern is machine-stitched muslin in a random pattern evocative of tree bark. There are pink areas on the outside where fabric dye has bled into the muslin during making up. The inside of the lantern is machine-stitched strips of bought and hand-dyed fabric arranged in non-repeating patterns. There are two hand stitched seams along the length of the lantern. The top and bottom edges are finished off with hand stitching. The light is shaded by muslin around the top.
